Planning in Ealing

Ealing has 30 conservation areas, and six of them (Bedford Park, Brentham Garden Estate, Churchfields, Ealing Town Centre, Hanger Hill Garden Estate and Hanger Hill (Haymills) Estate) have Article 4 directions. In most of those, planning permission is needed for all residential extensions and many minor alterations.

The council’s residential extensions guidance (SPD 4, kept as interim guidance) says:

• Rear extensions: in most cases a single-storey extension up to 3 metres deep and 3 metres high will be acceptable, as long as the house hasn’t been extended before. Larger extensions may be possible for detached houses.
• Dormers: rear dormers are generally more acceptable than side dormers, and dormers on front roof slopes are rarely acceptable.
