About half of Camden is in one of its 40 conservation areas, where alterations usually need planning permission and a heritage statement. Several conservation areas also have Article 4 directions on front and road-facing elevations.

Camden’s Home Improvements guidance says:

• Dormers should be subordinate to the roof slope. Where neighbours don’t have front dormers, a new one is unlikely to be supported; rear dormers and front rooflights are the usual alternative.
• Mansards are the most common roof extension. Where neighbours on a terrace already have traditional mansards, a similar one is likely to be acceptable.
